Child Development and the Internet
Will software games and other tools on the internet become our new resources for development of our children/People?
It isn't a far fetched idea that our future learning methods might be based on star trek. The computer decides the environment that we are been taught in and we play the game.
A growing number off academics are seriously examining the possibility for us to use the phenomenon of the internet and gaming as educational tools. Some academics thinks that certain software has the capability of putting us in a imaginational world, where the child or person can learn problem-solving-skills at more complex levels than the curriculum based skills-drill method.
The U.S army are using a lot of simulation software in training of their forces. If you start looking at technologies that was used in its infancy in the armed forces such as (mobile communication, Global positioning systems, night vision (used on almost all camera recorders today) etc. It is just logical that this technology will also spill over to civil society.
The real issue will be are we going to use this technology to enhance our curriculum based skills-drill method or are we going to use them in getting students to think about the meaning of knowledge in a different domains. To teach them the concepts of conceptual structure of knowledge domains.
True strength is getting people to think conceptually and engaging in meta level reflection. The world are changing and there are new ways and things to learn. The internet will be in the future a supplemental resource for our developmental needs.
Therefore we need co-operation between nonprogrammers (educators) and programmers (developers) on such a level that will enhance our programs that it will benefit society as a whole.
